The migration was largely attributed to the loss of nearly 65 per cent of livestock as a result of lack of pasture, water and livestock related diseases. The humanitarian situation has continued to worsen due to the below average Gu rains in May and June. Majority of the affected pastoralists have moved with their remaining livestock to areas in Puntland, Somaliland and Hiraan regions, in search of pasture and water for their livestock. This migration resulted in the separation of families.
Women, children and the elderly have either moved into IDP settlements or with relatives in urban and pre-urban areas while other family members migrated with their livestock in search of pasture. Additionally, more than 14, people have fled from Heraale town to nearby safer villages and other areas in Galgaduud region following the recent conflict between two rival armed groups inside Ahlusunah religious group.
The town is still deserted despite ongoing attempts by clan elders encouraging people to return. The newly erupted conflict in Mudug region under Haradheere district which composed of the following towns Dabagalo, Warshubo Miliqo, Aran, Dogob, Hanro and Xaasweyne , ruled by AS militia also caused many households to flee and come to Dhuusamareeb. A number of households who arrived in Dhuusamareeb by cars after the militia AS groups forced the local people to bring their children to be trained as child soldering.
