Firstly, I am an Australian passport holder and some of my friends are from the UK and US, we want to travel to Iran and would also like to visit Mahabad as we hear it is a beautiful city, my questions are -.

Yes, Australians can receive a VOA if arriving at an international airport band and if holding an onwards ticket and if able to claim a hotel booking.
Yes, US and UK passport holders are required to join a tour or engage a guide. There is plenty of discussion on all these issues in other threads, so search those out and add your questions there. No dangers as long as you behave and as long as you don't photograph sensitive installations. Again, read other threads. For the smoothest and most trouble-free trip, use buses or trains or hire a driver. Traffic in Iranian cities is insane. Thanks for the feedback, it much appreciated.
